Help Give Me a Name

A few months ago we decided that it was time to add a fresh face to the line-up here at Geddesburg and find Sherman a playmate. After some talking and weighing the pros and cons, we decided to get another Greater Swiss Mountain Dog.

Sherman's new friend was born on July 26 and we went for our first visit last weekend. These photos are from that trip. She was six weeks old in the photos. This little sweetie will be coming to live with us the first weekend in October and we still haven't decided what we are going to name her.

We've thrown several names around - Peabody, Shiloh, Savannah, Marsha, and Scarlet. We are searching for the perfect name for Sherman's new companion, but we aren't sure if we've found it yet.

All of these names (except Marsha) have a connection to the name "Sherman" in one way or another. The name Marsha is a reference to the Brady Bunch (i.e. Sherman will think "Marsha, Marsha, Marsha!" when the puppy gets too much attention).

This is your chance to help and enter your choice of a name in a chance to win a prize. To enter leave a comment on this post and suggest the name you think would be perfect for our new puppy. Please do not use the names listed above, come up with your own suggestion. I can't promise that we will actually use any of the suggestions - so to determine the winner I'll put all entries into a hat and let Brad draw. However, if we do decide to use on of the names suggested - that person will win automatically.

The winner will receive a skein of handspun sock yarn and a small project bag; both made by me. The contest will be open for entries until Wednesday, October 1, 2008. We are going to pick up the puppy that weekend and I will post the winners after we pick her up.

Oh my god, is she cute or what? I'm so jeleous! Nameing a pup is not easy, unless you dream about a dog, like I did, and knew from the start it would be called Sam.

Anyway, I saw a bag of chocolate, caramel und vanilla "Skittles". I thought that would be a funny name; also "Fudge" did come to mind, yummy little pup! :o) I'm sure Sherman will give her many licks. :o)

How about Georgia? I always liked that name & you could call her Georgie for short. It keeps the Sherman connection too.

I'm liking Shiloh because I'm a fan of alliteration. Sherman and Shiloh. She's so beautiful. I love her little pink nose. She's precious.

I really love Shiloh; but since I have to come up with another one, I really love Shayla. Such a soft, sweet name for a gentle girl like she looks to be. :o)

She's so cute!!! I like Shiloh because of the General Sherman/BAttle of Shiloh connection.

she is adorable!!!! Swissy puppies are the cutest! A friend of mine recently got a Swissy puppy and named him Gilbert. It fits his personality perfectly. I also like the name Emmie for a girl. Feminine and a bit old fashioned!

I think she looks like a Sarah - although the only Swiss Mtn Dog I have known is named Teton. She still looks like a sweet Sarah.
If I were to pick one of your selections, though, it would have to be Marsha - all the letters are in Sherman. :)

Oh, what a sweetie! Look at that face!! Those eyes!!!

I would recommend the name Sacha. Why? See:

And it sounds when matched with Sherman.

Oh, I like both Shiloh and Savannah, too. But what about either Eleanor (Elli for short) or Minnie? They were Sherman's wife and eldest daughter, respectively. But whatever you name her, she's sure a sweet little dog.

I'm going to suggest Mildred, as in Colonel Sherman Potter and his wife, Mildred from M*A*S*H. She's such a cute puppy!

She's so cute, I just want to cuddle her! I'd probably name her Cuddles, but I'm a big cuddly mush, so what do I know. I like Savannah, it's pretty and would go well with Sherman.

She's adorable.

I have no idea why, but the first name that came to my mind (before I even read your ideas) was Louise.

She's soooo sweet! OMG, it must have been hard to leave after the visit.

How about Shawnee (Sherman was named after the Shawnee leader Tecumseh).

i suggest eleanor (sherman's wife) or bennett (for bennett place in durham, where sherman set up the confederate surender). she looks like a bennett to me actually. she's the cuteness. :)

She is so darling!!! It won't really matter what you name her- she'll end up being "the boss"!!!

My suggestion is Gretel. It's what popped in my head when I thought of "Swiss" though I'm not too sure it's a very Swiss kind of name.

She's super cute!

OK, I know this is probably way to serious for such a cutie pie puppy, but I think in relationship to the Swiss heritage that your little pup has, she should be called Helvetia. For an explanation, see below:

Who is Helvetia?

Helvetia is a women -depicted standing tall and strong on many Swiss coins and postage stamps. Like her sister Lady Liberty, Helvetia is more than an icon.

Helvetia is a symbol of great fortitude, triumph, and plentitude. She is the changing face of the women in our global community. She is - mother, daughter, sister and the working mother of today and tomorrow.

She is the voice of the future - your voice.

...I think that sounds very impressive to me! :) And fitting to stand next to a General, Sherman!

What an adorable dog! Since she's a Swiss breed, how about Heidi? :)
